Pearl River Tower

The Pearl River Tower is a 71-storey clean technology skyscraper located in the Tianhe District in Guangzhou, China. It is designed to be a skyscraper for office use. It is intended to set new standards for skyscrapers in terms of a structure that extracts energy from its natural environment.

Pearl River Tower Profile

The Pearl River Tower was designed by architects Adrian D. Smith and Gordon Gill. They won the design competition held during the Fall of 2005. Engineering work was undertaken by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Groundbreaking for the skyscraper took place on September 8, 2006. Construction started in January of 2008 after the bidding was successfully held. The building was eventually completed in March, 2011.

Pearl River Tower Features

The Pearl River Tower follows a Modernist architectural style with it slim and elongated profile that curves as it reaches the top. The tower stands 309.7 meters or 1,015 feet high. It has a total of 71 floors, with five of them located below ground. The tower occupies a total floor area of 212,165 sq. meters or around 2,283,730 sq. feet. It has a total of 29 elevators all in all.

The tower was also designed with energy sustainability in mind. It also features the use of wind turbines, solar collectors and photovoltaic cells for energy conservation. It addition, the building also makes use of raised floors ventilation as well as radiant heating and cooling ceilings. The tower is considered as one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world. Many of its accomplishments include being the largest radiant-cooled office building in the world. It is also considered today as the most energy efficient super-tall building in the world.
